Govt must reduce road-tax on budget cars too

It is learnt that in a bid to discourage the practice of registering vehicles in other states to avoid paying a higher road-tax and to curb tax revenue loss, the Goa government on Wednesday decided to slash the tax on high-end vehicles. According to the new tax rate high-end vehicles will now pay a reduced road-tax. In today’s world almost every family owns at least one car. Cars are no longer a luxury item but have become a necessity in today’s fast-paced world. It would be in the fitness of things for the government to reduce the road-tax on budget cars as well. The common man ends up spending a huge amount on road-tax and the insurance cover on a new car. The aim of the government should be not only to bring in more revenue by encouraging buyers of high-end cars to register their vehicles in the state, but should also come to the rescue of the common man by reducing the road-tax on budget cars. The elite who buy high-end cars can well afford to pay the road-tax. It is the common man who has to bear the burden of the high road-tax and insurance cover. Many buy a budget car by taking loans from banks and finance companies. There could be several Goans who could be shying away from buying a car due to the high road-tax and insurance cover.
