Khell tiatrists and Konkani folk play artists have reportedly expressed discontent over the substantial fees demanded by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) for utilizing sound during the three-day Carnival celebrations. It is learnt that the GSPCB is charging a whopping Rs. 45,000 for sound permit to stage such shows. Khell tiatr is a very popular form of drama during the Carnival festivities, and each village has its own unique show in their quaint little settings. Here the artistes perform so confidently on the ground, surrounded by the audience, with no stage, no curtains and only accompanied by a brass band. Maintaining these traditions would also go a long way in promoting the Konkani language. However charging a substantial fee could sound the death-knell of this popular form of village entertainment. Here the sound is not at high decibels as is the case along the coastal belt. Almost the entire village is present at this khell tiatrs. If there is relaxation of sound restriction till midnight during the festive season from December 25 to January 1, why not have such relaxation during the Carnival festivities?
