The recent theft of a German shepherd dog in Goa has sparked concern among pet owners and animal welfare organizations across the state. According to reports, the dog which costs anything between Rs 30,000 to Rs 45,000 was allegedly stolen by a rag-picker and later sold for a mere Rs 4,500. The incident has prompted the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSCPA) to approach the police and demand swift action against those involved. Dogs, often regarded as loyal family members and trusted guardians of homes, are now becoming targets of theft. Many pedigree dogs command high prices in the market. Popular breeds such as German shepherds, Labradors, Golden retrievers, Beagles and other purebred dogs can cost anywhere from several thousand rupees to well over one lakh rupees. Such high values make them attractive targets for criminals seeking quick profits. The incident serves as a wake-up call for pet owners throughout Goa. Owners should ensure that their dogs are properly supervised, micro-chipped where possible, and kept in secure premises. Authorities must take strict action against those involved in pet theft and illegal animal trading.
