Whenever a fatal accident occurs in Goa, everybody talks about it, several videos circulate on social media, the family of the victim grieves, the culprit hurries to pervert the course of justice and authorities assure action against the guilty.
After a few weeks, the focus is off and life goes on as usual with no change in anything. There are several reasons for the increasing number of accidents in our State but the two main reasons are over speeding and drunken driving.
However careful one is while driving, there is always the risk of meeting with an accident due to reckless driving of others.
Therefore, when motivation and cautionary appeals have had no effect on rash drivers, introducing harsher laws that act as a deterrent is the only remedy. Ensuring influence free investigation is equally important.
The guilty should not only be punished with imprisonment and cancellation of driving licence but also made to pay "blood money" to the family of the victim.
