Every year, the Sunburn Festival, an EDM event, is held in North Goa, attracting large numbers of local youth and tourists. This year, it took place from 28th to 30th December. Tragically, a youth from Delhi passed away after being taken to Mapusa Hospital. The cause of death remains unclear despite a post-mortem conducted at GMC.
The festival is often linked to drug misuse, impacting young lives. The Anti-Narcotics Cell arrested five individuals for drug-related offences during the event. Despite government efforts, the drug trade thrives, especially in beach areas, affecting locals and tourists alike.
This raises the question: is Sunburn worth the cost of young lives? Goa has better ways to promote tourism, such as cultural festivals showcasing Goan folk dances like mando and kunbi, along with traditions from other Indian states. These festivals would highlight the region’s rich heritage, attracting tourists seeking peace and cultural experiences.
While loud music energises dancers, real art lies in rhythm and cultural expression. Goa should shift focus to promoting its traditional music and dances, offering unique and meaningful experiences. This gradual change could help preserve Goa’s identity while boosting tourism sustainably.
