It is right to encourage wetland protection

That is some encouraging piece of news. It seems like the authorities are waking up to the reality of the deteriorating environment. The Environment Minister has rightly underlined the importance of wetlands.

Yes, the task to protect and preserve wetlands is not only the responsibility of government but also of residents in the area. Yes, the government’s job is to support local bodies in protecting the wetlands. Rightly stated, one only hopes timely and corrective action is taken when complaints are lodged by residents. In Mumbai too, residents have been complaining to the authorities about dumping of debris on wetlands including mangroves.

The authorities must also take into consideration the impact of infrastructure projects which affect the ecosystem, the environment. Yes, protecting the environment is a joint responsibility.
