Konkani should be Goa's sole official language

The recent protest in Panjim led by former RSS chief Subhash Velingkar demanding official language status for Marathi in Goa raises important concerns about the future of Goa’s linguistic identity. Before seeking equal official status for Marathi in Goa, supporters should first urge Maharashtra to grant Konkani official language status in that state as well. Konkani is not merely a language but the cultural identity and unifying force of Goa. Recognising this, the state rightfully declared Konkani as Goa’s sole official language in 1987. Despite the circulation of Marathi newspapers, Konkani continues to be the language spoken by the overwhelming majority of Goans across communities. The demand for Marathi as an additional official language appears unnecessary, especially since the Official Language Act already permits Marathi for official communication and government-related purposes. Knowledge of Marathi is also considered desirable for several government posts. Attempts to divide Goans along linguistic or religious lines must be discouraged. Goa’s centuries-old communal harmony and unity should remain above politics and language-based agendas.
