Goa has seen many mega projects crop up in the past few decades, leading to a decline in the State's beauty. Such mega projects are often built to satisfy the demands of people from outside the State wanting to own a holiday home or own a second home here. Such demand does not relate to a necessity to find shelter. The locals are being pushed out from urban areas as they cannot afford expensive homes.
While, it is true that such development doesn't violate any of the local rules, it is pertinent to question their impact on the State's geography and demography. A sustained agitation by Carmona locals against a mega housing project is to be celebrated.
Encouraging the development of the business sector is always welcomed because it helps the local economy, but pushing for a real estate boom is detrimental. The housing market in a culturally sensitive area has to be controlled and monitored. Land is not an abundant resource in Goa, why should it be sold for short-term gains. The future generations will curse us for our temptation to make a quick buck.
