Lack of disabled-friendly infra cause for concern

There is lack of both disabled-friendly infrastructure and the audience’s knowledge of disabled-rights legislation and its absence in the institutions curriculum. The institutions must notify an “equal opportunity policy” that provides a detailed account of the steps taken by the institution to make themselves more accessible to people with disabilities.   Disability studies must be offered as a part of the compulsory curriculum. The educational institutions have failed to implement the provisions of the RPWD act.  And along with disabled-friendly infra, Braille signboards and a resource room specially equipped for students with physical and intellectual disabilities are very important in educational institutions.  It is a daily struggle for disabled people who have to commute daily via public transport, visit local grocery stores, ATMs, use pavements, etc., as no city in India is 100% disabled-friendly.  It shocked many when former PM Manmohan Singh (90), using wheelchair was moved from the front row of the Rajya Sabha to the last and his “ease of mobility” was cited as the reason for this change in the allocation of his seat in Rajya Sabha.  India's poor track record in enabling employment for disabled people is another area of concern.
