A close study of the two recent car accidents, at Banastarim and Porvorim in the early hours of the morning, which have claimed the lives of 6 persons and injured a few more seriously, has revealed a similar pattern of over-speeding under the influence of alcohol, after late- night house partying. This fact cannot be denied, downplayed or overlooked, as two earlier fatal car accidents on the new bridges, fall in the same category. No longer then can we apportion blame on the bad state of Goa roads , as the accident stretches were smooth and free of pot holes and craters. Secondly, as all these accidents have taken place past midnight , there can be no doubt whatsoever, that the number-one cause and culprit is alcohol. Those under its influence become victims, lulled into a false sense of courage, daring, and heroism at the wheel, to be one up on others, cutting lanes and overtaking, only to land up finally in fatal collisions, and over the bridge, as was the earlier cases . While breath analyser tests, nakha bandhis and Artificial Intelligence , have failed to prevent these mishaps, the only solution now is for man to tame himself.
