Managing inflation is not a priority?

Nirmala Sitharaman while speaking at the India Ideas Summit recently said that inflation is not a 'red letter priority' for her government, but also said that job creation and growth are priorities now.

This is a surprising comment from her, since in many democracies, governments are known to fall if inflation is not contained.

She also tried to pass the buck of managing inflation to the States claiming that they have also to contribute with measures to contain prices.

This is the perception of leadership that our FM has, where she is expected to take the lead and show the way being at the Centre, she is the first to wash her hands off the problem.

Speaking at another event on inflation, she said monetary policy with interest rate management should be part and parcel of the fight against inflation, which in India is difficult considering that RBI controls monetary policy.

This is yet another instance where Sitharaman a master at deflection has deftly avoided the problem.
