It is reported in the news items in the local dailies that “Mapusa Municipal Council decides to hike charges for its services”. Special meetings of the MMC which was convened by the Chairperson and Councilors to discuss several issues of the market including the enhancement of its charges for services. Among several issues discussed the infrastructure for thousands of people vending on the ground has not been discussed like their safety while earning their livelihood. These vendors by paying Sopo fees to the MMC earn their daily bread by vending in the scorching heat and rains. They are not provided with shed shelters like allotted in other civic markets in Goa nor are they allowed to put up their own umbrella shelter. They do their vending business allegedly in fear of goods confiscation by municipal inspectors. The need of the hour is for the MMC to solve their plight on business lines.
