Goa now witnesses migration from the Northern parts of India while it had been witnessing migration from Karnataka and bordering regions of Maharashtra for a long time. But at the same time, we have many Goan populations migrating to western countries.
So, migration is natural. And it’s high time that locals accept this. We cannot continue to show a different attitude towards the outsiders (as tagged). This will not only give rise to conflicts but also provide an opportunity for politicians to use the conflicts for their political mileage and gain.
And then the focus moves away from progress and development. Migration does come with challenges for the locals like competition to earn a fair livelihood, bearing the rise in the cost of living, impact on culture, disturbance in the culinary menus in restaurants, real estate exploitation, deforestation, etc., etc. While the celebration of festivals caters to solving the problem of culture dilution. We still have some open items that the government needs to address.
