I recently came across the page dedicated to “Global Goenkars” in The Goan, and I must admit that it left me with mixed emotions. On one hand, it’s heartening to see the community coming together to celebrate their heritage and culture, especially when it involves first-generation and second-generation Goans abroad. The page’s efforts to highlight moments of pride, such as the achievements of individuals of Goan origin in their host countries, are commendable.
However, I’m also left feeling perplexed when the headlines don’t quite match the content of the article. For instance, featuring an Australian MP who explicitly states they’re Australian raises questions about the relevance of such a piece on a page dedicated to the Goan diaspora.
What troubles me more is the disconnect between the celebratory tone of the article and the reality of the situation in Goa. Many Goans who migrated to the UK, for example, sold their properties to fund their migration, contributing to the current state of affairs in Goa. It’s ironic that their achievements abroad are celebrated while the consequences of their decisions back home are overlooked.
As I read the article, I’m torn between feeling proud of the Goan community’s accomplishments and ashamed of the unintended consequences of their actions. I’d love to see more nuanced discussions and reflections on the complexities of the Goan diaspora’s experiences.
