Earlier this month, we received an enlightening overview of the encroachments and consequent demolitions on Comunidade land in Sangolda.
This has become a contentious issue at the time of elections. Legislators sending rations and food supplies to the affected families may be a good humanitarian gesture but, that is not the solution to the problem.
Of course reconciling with the law is important. However, many a times at several locations across the country like in Mumbai, encroachments are taking place with the authorities turning a blind eye and then one fine day, everything is turned on its head.
In Mumbai for instance, a huge plot of land was cleared of encroachments recently after more than a decade. The bottom line is, let the authorities not be caught napping while encroachments take place in their backyard. Let's not create a humanitarian crisis at a later stage.
