The anti-defection bill was passed in 1985 when Rajiv Gandhi was the prime minister with marathon debates.
It was passed in good faith to stop defections and to act as a deterrent to stop MLAs and MPs from leaving one party to join another.
But to the surprise of everyone in the country the first defection was engineered in Goa and later there were many defections from 1990 to 2002.
Goa had 13 chief ministers in three Assemblies. Defections took place 21 times and the number of defectors was 80 in 2002.
Presently, we have also seen several Congress MLAs jump onto the BJP side thus making a mockery of democracy.
Courts also cannot intervene as the defections are within the law and hence we need a more stringent law if democracy has to survive and strengthened.
No MLA or MP must be allowed to defect to another party after the election process is over till 5 years. If this is enforced, then we will never have defections in the country and horse trading will be out of question to garner majority.
