The registration of 6000 NGOs including Oxfam India, Jamia Millia Islamia, National Foundation for Communal Harmony etc. is deemed to have been expired under the FCRA Act 2010.
Renewal applications of 179 organizations have been rejected and the rest had 'purportedly' not applied for continuation. This has rendered the affected NGOs ineligible for receiving any foreign funds or utilising their previous receipts from abroad. Effectively activities of 25% of the 22, 800 NGOs, most doing sterling work for the underprivileged and downtrodden in the country have ground to a standstill.
As per amended FCRA guidelines the validity of all NGO licenses has been curtailed to a period of five years which was not the case earlier.
The government seems to be on a witch hunt especially against Christian and Muslim run NGOs and snuff out all goodwill they enjoy in society.
The FCRA has become just another convenient tool in the hands of this vindictive government to beat institutions which it perceives as a danger to its vote banks or divisive ideology.
