As a regular follower of news and court cases in Goa, I have noticed a troubling pattern. Many cases filed by reputed NGOs against government corruption, irregularities and environmental destruction are being dismissed by certain judges. In some instances, heavy fines are even imposed on the NGOs themselves.
I am not a legal expert to comment on whether these judgements are correct. But two simple facts are clear to most Goans: (A) Corruption, environmental damage and illegalities are rampant under the present government, perhaps the worst Goa has ever seen. (B) Credible NGOs, already struggling for funds to fight for Goa’s future, are being fined. Meanwhile, when government officials or MLAs are found guilty, fines are either not imposed or are passed on to taxpayers.
The bottom line is that ruling politicians, ministers and officials are escaping scot-free. This does not seem just. The system increasingly appears to favour corruption, illegality and environmental destruction, aided by the government, municipalities and panchayats.
