Hopes for an early and amicable settlement of the grievances and demands of lakhs of farmers across the country have been shattered, after the prime minister refused to revoke the new farm laws and instead assured the farmers that they would stand to benefit from these laws.
Not only would their incomes increase, but they would also be free to sell their produce in the open market without being tied down to the state ‘mandis’.
Nothing new, since this has been the stand of the govt from the beginning. A few cosmetic changes, however, were proposed later, at the meetings with the Agriculture minister and Home minister, which were turned down by the farmers who demanded a total rollback of the new laws.
And so, the deadlock continues .It is a pity however, that there is still a feeling of mistrust among the farmers and a feeling of being cheated of their livelihood, despite all the assurances from the govt.
There are two sides to every story we are told. So, probably one needs to be a farmer to experience the ground realities and the truth.
