High drama reportedly unfolded on the Mandovi River at Reis Magos after a group of locals confronted workers allegedly attempting to dredge the riverbed to make way for a floating casino. Locals have alleged that the activity was linked to a plan by a casino operator to anchor a five-storied offshore casino which would devastate traditional fishing activities in the area. The proposed site lies in an ecological sensitive zone where traditional fishermen harvest clams which is a key source of livelihood for the locals. Previous relocation proposals for casinos were found unfeasible due to local opposition. Offshore casinos have been documented as causing various forms of pollution, including the dumping of solid waste and the generation of hazardous waste like used and waste oil, which contaminates the water bodies. The pollution from offshore casinos poses risks to aquatic life and the overall health of the river ecosystem, impacting water quality for other users. It is a fact that these offshore casinos bring revenue to the state government. But this should not be at the cost of depriving the locals of their livelihood.
