Mamata Banerjee's jibe at the Congress when she remarked, 'There is no UPA', makes her intentions clear. As far as the UPA is concerned of course, Mamata may be right, for, the UPA constituents have almost been wiped out in the last elections. She is therefore projecting herself and the TMC as the only alternative to the BJP, pan-India. While projecting herself as a viable alternative to the BJP she is weakening the fight against the BJP by alienating the Congress.
The Congress on their part of course, may be a pale shadow of what it was ten years ago but a division in the opposition ranks at this stage can only embolden the BJP. How one wishes all opposition parties could shed their egos and their personal ambitions and stand unitedly against the ruling party. The upcoming Assembly elections in several states could well be a pointer as to which way the opposition is heading. By the way, the election scene in Goa is definitely in a complete mess with too many parties wanting a chunk of the pie. The saying comes to mind, "too many cooks spoil the broth!"
