There has been a steady rise in the number of thefts taking place in the state. As many as four major thefts were reported across the state during the last ten days from September 23 to October 4. Porvorim police arrested two persons, including a BCom college student, who were allegedly involved in house burglaries across the state. The accused are believed to be involved in house break-ins in areas such as Taleigao, Bambolim, Mapusa and Siolim. The tourism season has just commenced and the number of thefts does not augur well for Goa. Police need to find out if migrants are involved in the house-breaks and if Goans are also taking part in the anti-social activity. Unemployment is one of the reasons for youth engaging in theft. Goa police initiated a tenant verification drive in North Goa focusing on verifying the credentials of around 40,000 tenants and house helps. There is a need to strengthen patrolling at railway stations and bus terminals. Robbers can even come well dressed, suited and booted or in disguise. Hence patrolling and random checks need to be done at all entry points.

At the Gogol crossing, I was dismayed to find that underground high-tension electrical cable termination work was being undertaken by the contractor without any safety gear, such as gloves or industrial shoes for the workers.In spite of many fatalities occurring due to such dangerous practices, people refuse to learn any lessons.
