The High Court of Bombay in Goa has rightly asked the PWD to act in removing the illegal hoardings on Goa's highways and roads that are proving dangerous to motorists and people. For any hoarding to be erected alongside highways or roads, it is mandatory to obtain prior permission from the concerned authorities, like the PWD , etc. There are various requirements to be fulfilled, such as location, size and height of the hoarding, structural stability, etc, for obtaining clearance for erection. In addition, it is also important that there is no hindrance to visibility or obstruction to the line of vision of motorists. Consequently, any hoarding that fails to meet these requirements, is said to be illegal. It is therefore surprising that there are so many of these illegal hoardings on our Goa roads that are found to be dangerous, for which the High court has rightly asked the PWD to act. The PWD has therefore an important role and obligation to fulfill, before we witness any untoward incidents of hoardings coming crashing down and killing several people, as it happened in Mumbai.
