During the ongoing hearing in the Supreme Court, there was an attempt to attack Chief Justice Bhushan Gavai. Such an attack on the judiciary is an act of cowardice. However, this incident highlights how deeply the frenzy of religion and its influence have affected even educated people in our country. Incidents like this bring shame upon democracy. Despite the attack, the Chief Justice calmly stated, “Such actions do not affect us; please present your arguments,” and continued the court proceedings. This dignified response symbolizes a strong and mature democracy. Religious frenzy in the country has reached alarming levels. Religion is no longer confined to homes or temples; it has infiltrated every sphere of life. While progressive nations are focusing on development and national advancement, in India, the excessive glorification of religion has made religious politics a way of life. Our mindset is being increasingly tilted toward religiosity. True democracy will flourish only when the misconception that “the country and religion are one and the same” or that “the country belongs to one particular religion” is erased. Otherwise, such unfortunate incidents will continue to occur, and the poisonous vine of religious fanaticism will keep spreading.
