I feel that we, the voters and citizens, have been taken for granted by our elected ministers. Those in power seem to have forgotten that their decisions should be democratic, not autocratic. The recent regularisation bills passed in the legislative assembly are not what the public wants.
Fortunately, the opposition has started to speak up after a long period of silence. One member has begun the “Save Goa, Save Goa’s Comunidade” initiative, and I hope others will join to increase pressure on the government. We elect representatives to improve areas that affect our quality of life, such as efficient administration, good infrastructure, fair welfare schemes, zero corruption, and law and order. Regularising unauthorised structures does not address these important issues.
With growing frustration over government failures, citizens are being pushed to their limits. I hope the ruling party remembers the 2011 Anna Hazare movement, which led to significant political change, and realises that the rights of law-abiding, tax-paying citizens cannot be ignored.
