Road accidents continue to show an alarming rise

Goa has turned into the nation’s accident capital, according to Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, who expressed alarm over the number of accidents occurring in the State. Road accidents continue to show an alarming rise.  It is crucial to strengthen enforcement mechanisms, enhance driver education and training programmes, and invest in improving the condition of roads and vehicles. Simultaneously digging and redigging of the roads in Goa has become the norm.  Goan roads have similarities with the surface of the moon. The moon is known to have craters which is not equipped or licensed to have vehicular movement, except for a lunar roving vehicle. In spite of fast-paced evolution of transportation, India does not have a scientific accident investigation agency. Twelve years have passed since the Sundar Committee on Road Safety and Traffic Management recommended the creation of a safety board through legislation. Under the archaic MV Act and the IPC, the police adopt simplistic methods to determine driver fault, rather than look at composite factors including bad road design and failure of civic agencies to maintain infrastructure while fixing responsibility for accidents.
