A road barrier forms an important part of road design and needs to be given due emphasis. A road median is a railing, fence, or concrete wall placed between the lanes of a highway in order to divide the traffic moving in opposite directions. The normal height of the divider is 6 inches only. It is observed that in several road accidents vehicle drivers lose control of the vehicle, which then can go to the other side of the road easily by crossing the road median due to its small height. Unsuspecting vehicles coming in the opposite direction may have no time to react in order to avoid a collision. Such a fatal accident was recently reported on the Atal Setu bridge. The chances of a vehicle jumping the road divider and going to the other side can be avoided by increasing the height of the road median. In Goa it is observed that on many roads the road dividers are made of plastic. They should be made of concrete so that they also serve as crash barriers in case of an accident. Road dividers need to have a fresh coat of white, yellow and black colour paint.
