There is an alarming increase in crimes and criminals are getting bolder and more violent. Residents, and especially senior citizens, are more vulnerable. There has been a major shake-up and transfers in the police force, which seems too lethargic and even undisciplined. They have been used more in government functions and events, with no time to protect the citizens. It is reported that police officers have not been complying with transfer orders with impunity. What is required, as stated by the CM who also holds the Home Minister portfolio, is a preventive mindset towards crimes. Criminals these days may be educated, mobile, moving interstate and hi-tech savvy.
The police force needs to establish good 24x7 surveillance and garner intelligence from all sources to be able to prevent crimes. Right from those entering and leaving Goa to what people are doing while loitering suspiciously/under the guise of salesmen etc. Establishing an interstate network, with a physically and mentally fit police force, is the need of the hour! What is basically required is a morally upright police service instead of a police force, free of the shackles of politicians, and reforms in line with the Supreme Court directions in 2006, for which none of the political parties have the will.
