School for migrant kids: A preposterous step

Adelmo Fernandes in the letter 'Schooling for kids of migrant workers -- is it feasible? (TGE, Nov 10) has rightly questioned the rationale behind the decision of the Directorate of Education Goa to make schooling for children of migrant workers mandatory.

The whole idea sounds preposterous knowing very well that migrant workers are birds of passage, usually employed by contractors on a temporary basis , probably lasting a year or two, after which workers are at a loose end, and are forced to move to greener pastures in other States for a job.

Schooling of their children is therefore affected. Secondly, parents of such children are well aware of these problems and their responsibilities  and are therefore the best judges to decide what to do with their children's education, keeping in mind their welfare and future.

Hence, the need for State interference is uncalled for.
