Time to protect our heritage

On a recent visit to Sancoale I was shocked to witness the state of neglect of 'Our Lady of Health' church more known for the remnants of its facade or the frontispiece.

The church was built by Jesuit missionaries in the late 1500s and again rebuilt later but unfortunately the structure was destroyed by fire in 1834.

The facade is a 'protected monument' and is under charge of the ASI. But the magnificent relic has trees growing all over, there is moss and mildew on its face and seems never to have been painted in centuries.

This criminal neglect of our heritage will ensure that the structure crumbles over time. I appeal to the ASI, the State government and the Centre to intervene immediately to save the frontispiece from extinction.
