The Missionaries of Charity (MoC) have been in the news in recent times, all for the wrong reasons, like forced conversions. And now we find that their application for renewal of their FCRA registration has been rejected (Read FCRA registration deadline extended...... The Goan Everyday 1 January 2022), leading to a cash crunch, and the activities of the organisation now seem to be badly affected.
Although the government has extended the validity of the FCRA registered NGOs, whose licences were not renewed by 31 December, by another three months, the MoC is left in the lurch since its application has already been rejected. This seems to be some weird kind of logic being applied to the renewal of FCRA registrations. Instead of rejecting the applications, it would be appropriate if the shortcomings are brought to the attention of the NGOs in question to be rectified within a certain time frame. Rejecting the FCRA application outright will naturally hamper the activities of the organisation, bringing them to a standstill. This is definitely not the right step undertaken by the government. As such, the eligibility criteria should be reviewed by the government in public interest. The government ought to show some compassion towards organisations like the Missionaries of Charity which is doing yeoman service to mankind by uplifting the homeless and marginalized sections of the society.
