The holding of the 37th National Games in Goa is expected to provide a boost to all disciplines, as well as the economy and tourism. National Games serve as a platform for spotting talent for international competitions. The increased grants, cash incentives, training, infrastructure, and other schemes are positive signs. Goa holds a prominent place on the soccer map of India, with Bruno Coutinho and Bramanand Sankwalwar having been decorated with Arjuna Awards. Promotion in other sports disciplines must receive equal attention.
Goa’s idea of establishing a Sports University is welcome. However, parents and schools do not encourage sports due to concerns about employability. Only a minuscule few find placements in sports as a career. There seems to be an adverse correlation between academics and sports. The promotion of sports persons is hindered by a lack of education.
Although academics and sports are two facets of education, schools largely glorify academic achievements for their reputation. School schedules and timings are not conducive to the promotion of sports activities.
