The novenas of St Francis Xavier at Old Goa have commenced. This year the nine-day novenas will culminate with the feast on December 4.
It is observed that, by tradition, the front rows of seats for the feast mass are reserved for the Goan Ministers, MLAs, and other politicians. It is against the teachings of Jesus Christ.
All are equal in the eyes of God. Then why treat these politicians as demi-gods. There are no VIPs in front of the almighty God who is the only one who is all powerful.
These politicians should not enjoy any privileges in the temple of God. Especially because they have done precious little to maintain the sanctity of the holy place by not opposing the illegal construction of bungalows in the protected area.
The front seats should be reserved for the old, the sick and the invalid. The politicians should come early if they want to occupy the front seats.
Seats could be reserved for the Chief Minister, the Governor and their families at the most. It would be in the fitness of things for all the Catholic members of the legislative assembly to write to the rector of the Basilica of Bom Jesus to stop this practice once and for all.
