The villages of Goa comprise of suitable 'vadde' according to the requirement. These vadde were created and named centuries ago by the natives and village authorities. Down the ages, these vadde have been maintained and respected by the people, institutions, village panchayats and also the government authorities.
The very existence of this system is now under threat from the upcountry builders of housing projects. At least one builder in my village has usurped the right and privilege of the Village Panchayat and the voters of Assagao by creating new vadde and naming them as Monforte vaddo, Fonteira vaddo and Colina vaddo. This action is downright preposterous and illegal.
The consequences of this action is such that the postman will deliver mail with the new names as part of the address. The courier men will do the same and the bus conductors will pick up the new names and begin announcing bus stops accordingly. And thus the new vadde will get de facto legitimised. Imagine, if other builders follow suit.
Therefore, l request the Village Panchayat and all right thinking citizens to step in immediately to stop this illegality and thoughtless action of the builders before it gets de facto legitimized.
