The Atmanirbhar Bharat scheme needs to be introduced in every possible field and this includes increasing the quantity of fish available in the water bodies.
With this aim in mind it is understood that nearly 50,000 fish seedlings have been released into the Mai Tollem in Curtorim by the Goa State Biodiversity Board (GSBB).
It is understood that the initiative was carried out with the help of the fisheries department, the Curtorim Farmers’ Club and the anganwadi workers. The seedlings that were used were reportedly of three fresh water varieties of fish in order to have a better catch.
This activity needs to be carried out in various water bodies across the state. Even though Goa is a coastal State and also has several fresh water bodies like rivers, lakes and ponds, we are not self-sufficient in production of fish.
As a result of which we rely on the neighbouring states for our daily need of fish. One way to be self-sufficient in this respect is to replenish the quantity of fish in our water bodies by releasing fish seedlings in them.
This will be in letter and spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Goa also needs to extend these steps towards self-sufficiency to farming, growing vegetables, milk production, etc., so that the state becomes self-sufficient in it’s daily needs.
