Sedition laws were introduced by the British in 1870. Its varied and indiscriminate use has left an indelible mark and huge impact on citizens.
The main aim of this draconian law was to stifle dissent and other protests. Actually dissent v/s sedition are two sides of the same coin.
Many activists, media personnel, cartoonists have been booked and have come under the scrutiny and gaze of these laws. Of late the three North East Delhi students who were booked, languished in prison and recently released on bail.
The Govt in a frenzy of tightening its grip on society and its citizens, have been conspicuously dealing with unruly elements by applying these laws.
There is much discussion of doing away with these old colonial era laws which are increasingly becoming irrelevant in a modern democratic country like India.
Freedom of speech with constructive ideas is the fundamental right of every citizen to further its development, and cannot be infringed.
These rights are sacred and at all costs be respected and kept by the government of the day in spirit and letter.
