Goa celebrates its 40th Statehood Day, marking four decades since becoming India’s 25th state. But as we commemorate this milestone, we must ask: Has Goa truly achieved freedom and progress? Contrary to our hopes, many of our elected MLAs and ministers have proven corrupt rather than honest. The promise of good governance remains unfulfilled. Basic infrastructure”quality roads, bridges, reliable electricity”remains a distant dream for many Goans. What is the value of 40 years of statehood if we continue to struggle with fundamental needs? Citizens who stand up to protect Goa’s environment face repression and imprisonment. Projects unwanted by the people are being forced upon us, trampling our rights and disregarding our voices. Religious politics are being wielded to divide Goans, promoting discord instead of unity. Our official language, Konkani, is sidelined in favor of external influences. Surprisingly, many feel the Portuguese rule was better in certain respects than the current Indian administration, which seems antagonistic to its own people. As we mark this 40th anniversary, let us demand honest governance, respect for our environment, cultural pride, and sustainable development.
