We often talk of getting beggars off the roads and putting them in a shelter home simply because they are of nuisance value. However there are also transgenders who go about asking for alms and we do nothing about it.
Transgender individuals violate people's personal space while begging for alms at traffic signals. In Goa many of them are seen along the coastal belt.
These transgender persons while asking for alms can get fairly “touchy”. At the traffic signals they touch the head of the two-wheeler riders as if giving them blessings. If people do not give them alms these transgender individuals begin to curse them.
The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, aims to protect the rights of transgender individuals and ensure their welfare. Social stigma and family rejection contribute to mental health issue, including high rates of suicide attempts.
While India has made strides in legally recognizing transgender individuals, significant challenges remain in ensuring their social inclusion, economic empowerment, and access to basic rights and healthcare.
