It is learnt that Salcete police have registered four separate cases of online cheating on Saturday. Two cases have reportedly been registered by Colva police while the remaining two have been registered at Maina Curtorim police state pending investigation. It is understood that gift scam is one of the most common online frauds in which fraudsters befriends people on social media and later tricks them into transferring lakhs of rupees under the guise of sending costly gifts. From hacking into computers to making fraudulent transactions online, there are many ways in which one can become a victim of illegal cyber activities. In Goa a state-of-the-art, cyber forensic laboratory of the Goa police was made operational at the cyber crime police station, Ribandar. This has enabled trained police personnel to engage in digital and forensic analysis of any crime including detection of the crime in a technical and professional manner. However it would be prudent for the general public to be more vigilant and not fall prey to cyber criminals.
