It is learnt that Goa is all set to host the first ever International Environment and Sustainability Summit from February 2 to 4. The three-day event will also see the launch of a nation-wide Wetland Conservation Campaign as part of the World Wetland Day celebrations. It is understood that nearly 300 delegates including those from other countries will be attending the event. Incidentally Goa has been grappling with the problem of waste disposal for far too long. The Sonsodo legacy dump has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) will reportedly sign Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) on waste disposal and green ratings to industries. Godrej company, under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) will be signing MoU to provide funds and resources on projects of waste disposal on a pilot basis by adopting three municipalities of Sanquelim, Bicholim and Valpoi and three village panchayats. It would be prudent for the government to encourage major companies operating in the State to include projects on waste disposal as CSR initiatives. This will go a long way in solving Goa’s garbage disposal issues.
