Goa is lacking in proper traffic signage despite the density of vehicles on our roads being one of the highest in India. Both road safety and general informative signage is given the short shrift by city fathers. Besides the need for signs at interfaces of ferry and road transport, along the roads, at beaches, tourist spots, public buildings and educational institutions, it is also important that signs be both in Konkani and English and be easily readable with high visibility. At select locations and high traffic areas like railway and bus stations, signage in braille should also be incorporated for ease of the visually-challenged. Speed limiting plates should also be put up along highways and even village roads where lack of police surveillance encourages youngsters to zip along at extremes. Road signage should be coupled with CCTV cameras for effective compliance of motor vehicle rules and deterrence.
