The shocking daylight attack on activist Rama Kankonkar shows the dismal state of law and order in the State. I have been following Rama’s speeches and campaigns for a long time. His criticism was always directed at Goa’s ruling ministers and some public figures linked to the top BJP leadership. It is hard to believe that such a bold attack could happen without the support or direction of senior political leaders. The Chief Minister has promised strict action. But what if a proper investigation points to his own party leaders? If the government is serious, it can uncover the truth and expose the masterminds, but I doubt this will happen. We have seen this before. A few months ago, bouncers attacked a family in Assagao. A woman from outside Goa was named as the main suspect, and the Chief Minister promised action. Yet, when the chargesheet was filed, her name was missing and the DGP was quietly transferred out of the State. This is how the Home Ministry works in Goa. In Rama’s case too, we cannot expect the Goa BJP government to conduct a fair investigation or deliver justice.
