Will water canal benefit Assagao?

A circular has been issued recently by the Water Resources Department Mapusa regarding construction of a water canal in Assagao of 4.65 km length and also laying underground pipeline of various diameters.

No plan showing the route of the canal or the size of the pipeline has been provided for information of the people. Also, no suggestions or objections have been called for, as normally done, but owners of the properties are told to give their consent by November 11.

Going by the list of Survey numbers of the properties and owners names provided, it is seen that the proposed canal will pass through thickly populated areas.

In this situation, the question that arises is, has the Department done proper survey of the suitability of the land for the canal and how will it prevent demolition of the houses.

The project lacks clarity. The WRD should clarify and address the concerns of the people urgently.
