It might be easy to be a woman today, but it has not always been this way. There was a time when the words "feminism" or "women empowerment" weren’t even coined.
There was a time when women struggled to break society's so called ‘norms’ and achieve what they were truly born to be.
This Women's Day brings to mind women who shone from the pages of our history books.
Draupadi is the first feminist of Indian mythology, starting with woman power, self belief and being confident. Savitribai Phule played an important role in improving women's rights and ending social prejudices in India during British rule. Vijaya Lakshmi pandit served as president of the Indian National Congress twice. Rani Lakshmi Bai formed a volunteer army consisting not just of men, but also women.
Sarojini Naidu was the governor of Uttar Pradesh and Prem Mathur became the first women pilot in India.
We can think of names like Kalpana Chawla, Indira Gandhi, Mother Teresa and the list goes on.
Women have equal rights, but still face problems in today’s world. Let us hope for an even better environment for them.
