In yet another incident of unruly tourists driving on the beach, Calangute police arrested a Delhi tourist driving a jeep on Candolim beach on Tuesday. Police were informed after the four-wheeler got stuck in the sand at one of the entrances to the beach blocking the way. It may be recalled that some weeks back a tourist vehicle got stuck in the sand at Morjim Beach. It is pertinent to note that Morjim Beach is a turtle nesting site in North Goa. It also leads to destruction of sand dunes leading to loss of biodiversity. Driving on the beaches also poses danger to the other visitors to the beach, especially little children and elderly citizens. Driving on the beaches is banned and the violators can be booked under Section 279 and 336 of the IPC. The accused can be penalized with a fine ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 50,000. The violation can also invite penal action under Section 188 of IPC. Signboards warning people against driving on the sand need to be put up at all beaches.There should be zero tolerance to driving on the beach.
