Are we heading from democracy to monarchy?

History shows cyclical shifts between democracy and centralised power, driven by factors such as internal conflict or the need for strong leadership in times of crisis. However, the data shows a different trend... Rather than a shift towards monarchy, there is a continuing global wave of authoritarianism. This is happening gradually, so be alert!

Major global assessments can bring about significant change. The V-Dem Institute’s Democracy Report states that global democracy has fallen to levels seen in the late 1970s, and nearly 74% of the world’s population lives under some form of authoritarian rule. Is this true or false?

Freedom House’s ‘Freedom in the World’ report states that global freedoms and democratic safeguards have declined for 20 consecutive years. We think of this as true, but we don’t address it. Why? Because we are becoming slaves to the “times.” We are succumbing and sacrificing ourselves. It is time to think about transformation.

Rather than formally enthroning so-called “kings,” the decline of modern democracies typically involves the legal consolidation of executive power, the erosion of rights, and the curtailment of civil society. Try to recognise who these our well-wishers are.

Democracies are actively responding through civil liberties movements, but global indicators suggest a continuing struggle against the expansion of executive and authoritarian control. It is important to be vigilant. Will the modern “babas” shed light on this issue? Tell us stories about how democracy can be strengthened for the overall welfare of society and the nation.
