The work on the Oslo-design foot overbridge at Bambolim is reportedly underway, with the project estimated to cost a staggering Rs 100 crore. The bridge is intended to enhance pedestrian safety by providing people with a safer way to cross the busy road. At a time when Goa faces pressing challenges involving water supply, sewage management, healthcare and road infrastructure, spending Rs 100 crore on a single footbridge is not convincing. An Oslo-design footbridge generally refers to a modern pedestrian bridge inspired by Scandinavian design principles, emphasizing functionality, aesthetics, accessibility and integration with the surrounding environment. Absence of adequate side railings, leaving wide-open gaps along the structure raises serious safety concerns of those using the footbridge particularly for small children, who could be exposed to the risk of falling. The authorities must ensure that all safety requirements, including secure railings, child protection, non-slip surfaces, lighting and accessibility for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, are addressed before the bridge is opened to the public.
