As the political drums beat louder, the run-up to the 2027 Goa Assembly elections is shaping up to be unpredictable. Seasoned politicians, turncoats, independent aspirants and regional outfits are jostling for space in an increasingly crowded political arena. Benaulim is emerging as one of the state’s most intriguing battlegrounds. The constituency could witness the return of familiar rivals Churchill Alemao and Mickky Pacheco, both seasoned politicians eyeing a comeback. Adding a generational dimension is social worker and youth leader Warren Alemao, Churchill’s nephew, who is reportedly considering an electoral debut. However, any challenger will have to contend with incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Venzy Viegas, who will seek to defend his seat against a formidable field. With several political heavyweights potentially contesting, Benaulim could witness a keenly fought, multi-cornered battle.
Beyond individual constituencies, speculation over the revival of the dormant United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) has revived memories of its earlier prominence and leaders such as Anacleto Viegas and Radharao Gracias. For an older generation, the party symbolises regional political assertion and Goan identity. Whether this nostalgia can translate into electoral support remains uncertain. Attention is also turning to the opposition’s efforts to challenge the BJP’s hold over key constituencies. A major question is whether it can devise an effective strategy to unseat sitting BJP MLA Ulhas Tunekar in the Navelim-Varca belt, where critics have expressed dissatisfaction with his performance. The constituency’s significant Catholic electorate could influence the outcome, making candidate selection, local alliances and voter mobilisation crucial.
Meanwhile, the Congress cannot be written off. Through its high-profile ‘Goy Rakhonn Yatra’ (Save Goa Yatra), the party has sought to strengthen its grassroots organisation and mobilise opposition to the ruling dispensation. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s participation in the concluding stages gave the campaign a national dimension, as Congress attempts to consolidate anti-incumbency sentiment and re-establish itself as the BJP’s principal challenger. With political equations evolving and aspirants jostling for prominence, the 2027 elections will test not only established leaders’ appeal but also the strength of regional identities and emerging alternatives. The opposition’s ability to convert public discontent into electoral gains will be equally crucial. For Goa, the coming months could prove decisive in determining whether the BJP retains its political dominance or faces a stronger, more fragmented challenge from established rivals and emerging forces.
