Clarification needed on Ujjwala Yojana benefits

The rollout of the promised three LPG cylinders and ₹3,000 Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) under the Goa Ujjwala Yojana has created considerable confusion among beneficiaries. While the scheme is being presented as a major welfare measure, the government must clearly explain the eligibility criteria, documentation and application process. A key question is whether beneficiaries already receiving assistance under DSS schemes are also entitled to these benefits. The authorities should issue a written clarification to prevent genuine beneficiaries from being excluded. There is also uncertainty over the effective date. If this scheme fulfils an election commitment made in 2022, will eligible families receive the benefits retrospectively, or only from the date of implementation? The short application deadline and reports of forms being distributed through political representatives have further raised concerns about transparency and equal access. Welfare benefits should not depend on political contacts. The government should extend the deadline, publish clear guidelines, establish help desks and provide online application and status-tracking facilities. Ultimately, a welfare scheme must be transparent, accessible and non-discriminatory.
