Death does not discriminate, no matter who we are

Ronnie Dsouza’s latest letter about All Souls’ Day has prompted me to offer my thoughts on the subject of mortality. For being a reality and a basic characteristic that we all share, we rarely ever reflect on our own mortality. Neither do we seem to learn that death does not discriminate, no matter who we are. Why does it always take an obituary or a funeral or a day to remember departed souls to think about the uncertain certainty awaiting us all? How many times have you seen your face in people being lowered into the ground? How many deaths will it take for us to realize the transience of our lives? Whatever your answers are, reflect on them, for this letter is dedicated to the recently bereaved. Healing from the death of loved ones is always an unsettling and a non-linear journey that takes months and sometimes several years to complete. The journey is also deeply personal because our relationships with the departed vary from each other.Your life matters, just as much as theirs did to you.
